Acqua di Gio Profumo
The opinions of online fragrance community and the real world overlap in a few fragrances, and Profumo is one that sits closer to the online community. With rumors and “ confirmations ” of its discontinuation, Profumo is suffering the slowest death. The Acqua di Gio DNA is so appealing that it can prolong a discontinuation, but it seems if it does poor enough in the real world Armani would rather use the shelf space for something else. This is conjecture, of course, but I’m drawing it from my (and online fragrance community’s) experience with the beloved He Wood Rocky Mountain Wood. It was good enough to carry in Sephora for a while, unappealing enough to the masses to discontinue.
You are not lying if you say Profumo smells mature, very good, or like a well-dressed man. Smell has a way of bringing connotations of our experiences. Perhaps an incense note graced an old man in your life, or maybe the note is new to you entirely. I enjoy it, and I can’t imagine wearing it without a shirt collar.
I love it enough to have a full bottle, but it remains full because I’m hardly in the occasion to wear it. It’s fresh, and most agree it is a warm-weather fragrance, but the incense adds enough sophistication to keep it gentlemanly. It’s certainly not a cargo-shorts fragrance, but some of our fathers tuck t-shirts under their shorts and wear the most vetiver-heavy fragrance to a Home Depot. There are no rules; take my thoughts for what they are.
It's aquatic, and it has what I’d call a “cavernous” citrus smell. Imagine squeezing lime in a pitcher, pouring it out, and smelling the pitcher. It’s subtly prominent. However, the star of the show is the incense, but it’s what I believe is most polarizing. For whatever a person’s own reason, the incense can be off-putting or wonderful.
I’d wear it to any event with a suit and tie in the warm months, but you and your cargo shorts can do whatever you want.
Acqua di Gio Profondo
Take whatever you think of the original Acqua di Gio EDT and add sweet citrus and sea salt. This is a facile way to put it, but it’s a great enhancement to something that was so good that everyone and their dad wore it once. It’s an overplayed song with a couple new instruments and a new front man.
You just can’t deny it works. I hate to admit I like it a lot. One of the reasons we take time to have nuanced fragrance discussions in online boards is to discover something that smells different enough but as equally pleasing to the masses. And here comes a popular line with something too good to not want to wear in the spring and summer. But hey, at least it’s not Dior Sauvage.
The opening is vibrantly fresh, and the sweetness of the citrus reminds me of aloe vera soft drinks in the best way, not cloying or too meek. It’s the sort of sweetness that thrives in hot weather. The dry-down has a healthy mineral note that accentuates the sweetness and floral notes. I don’t pick up the musk, but I think that’s a good thing. The opening and dry-down of the fragrance work in tandem for a large portion of its performance. That’s not to say it is linear, but that it holds enough of both throughout its life. And I must add, it smells like quality stuff.
Back to connotations, I’d say the range is birth to death; anyone can wear this. It’s a disservice to just call it a safe fragrance, or the dreaded “office safe” label. It’s versatile as hell, and it does great in the warm months and well in the cold months. I don’t know if I can call it sexy, elegant, or casual. It’s definitely masculine and fresh. It’s the intersection of a lot of circles in a Venn diagram.
Acqua di Gio Profondo Lights
Profondo is so good that it got its own flanker. Profondo Lights takes the sweetness of Profondo and amps it up, but still not cloying. It’s still great for hot weather. (I live in Houston, where it’s hot and humid.) It drops the mineral note and adds a wonderful cedar wood base.
I feel this is so close to Profondo that the same usability applies to Profondo Lights. Even then, I wouldn’t say it’s redundant. It’s a change of pace, and I do find myself reaching for it especially on rainy days when I want something uplifting on a warm but gloomy day. I really wish it wasn’t a limited release. I think it deserves a permanent spot, but Armani doesn’t care about the Profumo crowd’s opinions.
Acqua di Gio Eau de Parfum
Before I blindly ordered Acqua di Gio Eau de Parfum (EDP), I sprayed the Eau de Toilette (the OG) on my hand and thought, “Well, if it’s just going to be stronger then the ceiling is the floor.” I was wrong. It’s not just stronger; it’s enhanced.
I don’t know how designers designate fragrances as flankers versus new concentrations (i.e., giving it its own name like “Profondo” vs Eau de Parfum). I believe the EDP is different enough to be a flanker, but I’m glad Armani is putting its weight behind it as a new concentration of the best-selling fragrance with a commitment to sell it in refillable bottles. I like it a lot.
Naturally, anyone who likes anything from the Acqua di Gio line is going to wonder if it’s redundant. I would ask them, “You’re just now asking if it’s redundant, and not when any of the other Acqua di Gios released?” They are all the same “DNA,” and designed by the same perfumer, Alberto Morillas.
Morillas himself describes this as “ Energie fraicheur Boise mineral ” and “ Fraicheur intense minerale ,” which Google translates as “Fresh energy Woody mineral” and “Intense mineral freshness,” respectively. I agree the EDP smells exactly what Morillas went for.
The EDP is as versatile as Profondo and Profondo Lights, which puts it in competition with its own line. Yet, I still wouldn’t say it’s redundant.
The opening is a citrus blast, but not as sweet as Profondo. I would call it a “clean” citrus that works in concert with a gorgeous mineral note. This initial fusion is close to something in the OG, but it then diverges to a bitter-sweetness that has a bite . It’s like the rind of a lime with a hint of a cleanly sweetness. I believe this bite is the reason some are inclined to say it smells similar to Profumo with its patchouli note, but what makes Profumo punch the nose is the incense. This is a different piercing note, but much less polarizing than incense. This is the “fresh energy” Morillas describes.
The dry-down is a mineral sweetness with a floral freshness and distant wood note that’s absent from Profondo but prominent in Profondo Lights. The sweet-bitterness from the citrus rind goes from opening to taking a backseat to the mineral- and floral concert. Like Profondo, the opening and dry-down are close but not linear. You get what you love out of both for the majority of its performance.
The scent may be less complex than the Profondos, but EDP is denser. It does more with less, and it is more invigorating.
Closing Thoughts
I reach for EDP and Profondo more than any other. I live in Houston, where it’s hot and humid like a steam cooker. It’s not a pleasant tropical heat; it’s swampy and miserable. So, fresh is good, and less sweet is typically better.
EDP performs masterfully on my skin. Projection and longevity are better than anything I could ask for, with Profondo coming a distant second because it seems to die much faster. That's not to say Profondo performs poorly, but that EDP performs that much better. In the hottest of days, EDP is the way to go, and it smells closest to the beach compared to the rest of the line. Scent-wise, it’s a matter of what I’m in a mood for, as I love both. However, I believe ladies will appreciate Profondo more because of its sweetness. You’re a winner either way with these two.
Profumo will always have its place for suit and tie occasion for me, and it would be a shame if it truly is discontinued. I remember wearing it to a job interview and feeling like a badass. I got the offer.
Profondo Lights is just really good, but it doesn’t do enough to separate itself. I am glad I have it for rainy days, though.

Love all these scents. The EDP is probably my favorite, maybe Profumo, I like how they really played with the DNA in those two. Profondo probably the easiest to wear, modern AdG fragrance. I like lights in the spring. L’Oreal did good work on these.

I agree. These are all summer bangers, which I appreciate in a hot climate.

Most reviews say that Profondo is the best ADG flanker while Profumo is more divisive with people either loving it or hating it. In a YouTube video @ccfragrances guys did a random street poll of women in Munich with 13 voting for Profondo versus 10 for Profumo. The women who chose Profondo said it smelled more masculine.

I think Profondo may be more popular with women because of how clean it smells. A YouTuber named Ched Noir battled Profondo vs EDP vs Profumo, and EDP was dead last, with Profondo running away with it. But there's only so much you can smell on a strip of paper in the cold outside.

10/10 review and comparisons.
Profondo is great, not a fan of Profumo, don't have much experience with the original, Lights and the EDP.
Really intrigued with the EDP.
